Space Derby

Space Derby rockets are easy to assemble and fun to decorate. The challenge is to create an aerodynamic rocket that is strong enough to withstand the pressure of high speed flight and tightly wound rubber bands. Brand new to Space Derby? The Wikipedia Space Derby entry offers an excellent introduction. You may also want to check out the Space Derby Rocket Assembly Tips web page for some helpful rocket building tips.

Here are a few tips to get you started.
The official space derby kit includes all necessary materials and instructions for building. Decorating is up to you.
Reduce drag by making all surfaces smooth. A rounded nose causes less drag than a sharp nose. A good design has all leading edges rounded and trailing edges tapered to reduce air friction.
Rubber bands should be lubricated before the race. They are the motors and should be strong and flexible. You can use or soak them in oil or even dishwashing soap.
- The end with the small hole is the rocket nose. A potato peeler is good for carving the balsa wood (at least initially until your rocket has taken shape).
- Do not lose the little brass piece and please make sure the rounded end of the yellow propeller piece is joined or facing the brass piece (the flat edge of the yellow propeller is on the farthest outside/front of the rocket).
- To help increase the rocket's speed, reduce the weight. Do not weaken the area around the hanger or carve away the nose.
- Do not apply too much paint to the outside. If you paint it, consider sanding it between coats of paint to keep the weight off/down.
- Make the propeller shaft as short as possible by bending it close to the prop. Cut off the excess wire with wire cutters.
- Finally, do not glue either the propeller nose or the piece at the back (where the rubber bands are held) as we need to be able to check and replace the rubber bands inside the body of the rocket. You can make/use a coat hanger to make a tool for grabbing the rubber bands through the body of the rocket.
